The dying Norfolk Island pine is to disappear from the Port Campbell Foreshore next week, making way for extended decking.

Corangamite Shire Coastal Ward Councillor Jamie Vogels said the tree on lower Lord Street will be removed on Thursday 14 September, weather permitting.

“Contractor CivilNow will donate the wood to community groups and creatives,” Cr Vogels said.

“Safety fences will be going up around town this week so works can start on lower Lord Street and the foreshore.

“CivilNow will set up a compound behind Port O’Call, next to the car park. There will be no parking on the grassed area while this stage of works is carried out.

“Fencing of the construction sites on the foreshore will start next week in preparation for some set-out of works there.”

Cr Vogels said Council’s Port Campbell Town Centre team would contact impacted businesses and residents along lower Lord Street and the foreshore before work starts.

Works on the main section of Lord Street is to take place in winter 2024.

“Thanks to everyone who gave us their feedback on the question of the top roundabout where the Great Ocean Road turns into Morris Street,” Cr Vogels said.

“It was line-ball with 14 people voting it should be converted so all traffic goes down Morris Street and Cairns Street is for local traffic zone, versus 13 against.

“The department of Transport is now advising us how to best keep unwanted buses and tourist vehicles on the Great Ocean Road and off local streets.

“While the vote wasn’t definitive, Council appreciates the feedback we received from impacted residents.”

“Thanks again for your feedback,” Cr Vogels said.
