Project update August 2022

2022 Works Package update

We had planned to start works on Tregea Street, Morris Street and Great Ocean Road roundabout (at the top of town) in August after awarding the 2022 works tender.

Unfortunately we did not have any luck securing a contractor from the second round of tenders. As a result, we’ve had to re-think how to kick-start the project.

New Project Manager Aaron Huttig will now manage some smaller packages of works focused on the town centre. These will be completed before summer.

They include:

  • New parking and plantings in Tregea Street
  • Zebra crossing in Tregea Street which will provide a safe pedestrian crossing point in front of the Sow & Piglets linking the caravan park
  • New footpath in Morris Street to link back to the northern end of Lord Street
  • Calming measures in Morris Street for traffic approaching Lord Street

Converting the top roundabout on the Great Ocean Road to a sweeping right-hand turn into Morris Street will no longer be a top priority.

Introducing new Project Manager, Aaron HuttigAaron Huttig.JPG

We have appointed experienced civil engineer Aaron Huttig to oversee the project when physical work begins.

Aaron will be based part-time at the former Alcove Cafe site at 34 Lord Street. Drop in, have a look at the plans and ask some questions if you see him there.

After growing up on a broadacre cropping and sheep farm outside Hopetoun in the Southern Mallee, Aaron worked in Melbourne before returning to regional Victoria.

He held various roles at Hindmarsh Shire Council and Mildura Rural City Council where he delivered the $42 M Mildura Sporting Precinct and $6 M Mildura Riverfront Project Stage 2.

Mr Huttig was most recently Manager Projects and Facilities at Warrnambool City Council where he oversaw the $4.6 M Edwards Bridge replacement and $3 M Lake Pertobe upgrade.

The Port Campbell Town Centre Revitalisation Project will allow Mr Huttig to get back to the grass roots.

“I wanted to get back into working with the community again to deliver community-based infrastructure,” he said.

2023 Works Package, General Store parking options and public art

We still plan to advertise tenders for the 2023 Works Package in October. This will include all the projects listed in the table to the right. Before this happens, we intend to do more community consultation around parking in front of Port Campbell Shopping and the integrated artwork project by Vicki Couzens.

We will present three different options for parking in front of Port Campbell Shopping and ask the community to choose. You will be able to view plans for the options by dropping into our new project office (former Alcove Cafe site at 34 Lord Street) on 25 and 26 August. These options will also be made available on this website.

Public ArtVicki Couzens

Renowned artist and former south west Victoria resident Vicki Couzens has been commissioned to design integrated artwork as part of the 2023 Works Package.

Vicki was chosen from 19 artists to design art work spanning the town centre redesign. A Keerray Wooroong woman, her family oral history speaks of cultural connection, belonging and history with Port Campbell.

“It is dear to my heart, in being on Country with family cultural and historical connections,” she said.

“Importantly, I am very interested in the opportunity to weave a story through the artwork that respects and embraces the shared history of the special place that is Port Campbell."

Vicki’s artwork will tell a story of interconnectivity, kinship and community, using design and materials that reflect the local environment.

Before starting, there will be an opportunity for Port Campbell residents to meet Vicki on 25 and 26 August and contribute ideas to the project.
